Fire Exit 01

Fire Exit Signs Fire Fighting Equipment Signs

Complying with the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Legal Requirements are:

  • A rectangle or square shape
  • A white pictogram on a green background (the green part to take up at least 50% of the total area of the sign
  • The regulations also state that all fire exit safety signs must contain a symbol e.g. a running man

The basic elements of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations which came into force on the 1st December 1997 demand the provision of an adequate means of escape from all premises and the clear indication of escape routes and exit doors.

Eye Protection

Mandatory Safety Signs

BS 5378 : Part 1 : 1980 states that for mandatory safety signs at work
  • The background colour shall be blue
  • The symbol or text shall be white and placed centrally on the background
  • Blue shall cover at least 50% of the area of the sign

Prohibition Safety Signs

BS 5378 : Part 1 : 1980 states that for prohibition safety signs at work
  • The background colour shall be white
  • Circular band and crossbar shall be red
  • The symbol shall be black and placed centrally on the background and shall not obliterate the crossbar
  • Red shall cover at least 35% of the area of the sign

  • The triangular band shall be black

  • The background colour shall be green
  • The symbol or text shall be white
  • The shape of the sign shall be oblong or square to accommodate the text or symbol
  • Green shall cover at least 50% of the area of the sign

Tactile Sign

Special Format Signs

For individuals with a visual disability, direction finding in public buildings and unfamiliar surroundings is a particular challenge. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 strives to reduce the difficulties as much as possible. It specifies that Auxiliary Aids and Services must be provided to help disabled people get access to the services they seek.

  • Braille grade 1 in standard English
  • Unobtrusive indicators guide the Braille user immediately to the Braille section of the sign
